Is it legal to smoke weed in Spain?
Yes… and No! – read carefully –
It is legal to smoke weed in “Private” places only. There are not many of those – your private apartment or villa / hotel, provided there´s no complaints the staff generally don´t mind. Or the private cannabis association’s. Anywhere else is forbidden.
Can you buy Weed in Spain?
It´s legal to smoke, yes, but the sale and promotion of cannabis in Spain is still illegal. But growing for personal use (up to 2 plants) in a private space is legal.
What is a Cannabis Social Club?
A real Cannabis Association is – A community of passionate cannabis activists who get together and form a non for profit association in order to cultivate and share to only their family, friends and any other cannabis enthusiasts who would like to contribute towards the safe consumption , and / or the study of cannabis and it´s effects – the aim is to eliminate the black market and to provide an exclusive, safe and controlled environment for the private consumption of cannabis. It´s a revolution have no doubt. The privacy law dating back to 1970´s in Spain allowing people to do almost whatever you want in your own private space is what allows Spaniards to create a private space just for the safe consumption and study of cannabis and its effects.
What’s the difference between a “Weed Coffee Shop” and a “Cannabis Association / Social Club?”
Ok… Simply put – A Cannabis social club is a non for profit organisation. A Weed coffee shop is a business designed purely to make profit. So in Amsterdam they have Coffee Shops and in Spain we have Cannabis Associations, actually we also have “cannabis coffee shops” here in Spain. They are illegal and are purely designed to make profit, these are the clubs that we call “tourist traps” because they were designed to catch tourists and make profit. Avoid these clubs at all cost, If you find yourself in a cannabis club where the prices are the same as Amsterdam, get out, you´re in a tourist trap and the club is not a club fighting for the revolution for the legalization of cannabis in Spain… they are only out to make as much money as possible, which generally results in – underpaid and overworked staff, lack of cleanliness and hygiene, because there is only 1 staff member, high prices, lack of furniture – sit on the floor, beanbags and such – don´t be fooled by “minimal” this is because they don´t want to spend money, just keep it… what else, ah herb may be as it seems, bad quality, changed names, and chemicals… are all possibilities if you don´t choose a REPUTABLE cannabis club. Free membership is also an obvious sign that the club is desperate, desperate is not good. This generally means the club is rubbish and they don´t have returning members, so they just want to sell weed, free membership is illegal, it´s designed to put off non smokers from giving it a try, Spanish government do not want to encourage people to start smoking, simple as that.
Are tourists allowed in weed clubs in Spain?
The only way that clubs can accept you legally, is if you have a resident of Spain who is also a member of that club to bring you or invite you. Some weed clubs, example in Tenerife some clubs require you to be a resident in Tenerife, not just in Spain, and one club in the north of Tenerife – Santa Cruz – requires you to be a resident in Tenerife for a min of 10 years before you can join their club.
Depending where you are in Spain, the local councils and police force have lately, taken a much more relaxed approach towards tourists and weed clubs alike, but on the other hand In Valencia for instance, the police are on the alert for clubs taking tourists and actually hang about the clubs regularly stopping tourists and locals alike. They have “safety hours“ where you can transport your cannabis from the club to your house between hours where children are generally in bed. A grey area we face everyday unfortunately, it´s only legal to posses in the clubs or in your home. we will discuss this now… after another pic 😉
How to access a Cannabis Club – the correct way?
A few ways you can do this.
1 – Contact the Clubs directly via e-mail, tel, social media or any other form of contact you can find for the club you´d like to join. This is tricky and time consuming, finding the tel number to find that it doesn´t actually work “number doesn´t exist” is actually the most common problem. Email and social media also is time consuming… unless you´re lucky you won´t get a response the same day, commonly you e-mail 10 clubs – 1 responds the same day (maybe not close by) .. 3 respond within a week.. and if you´re lucky you´ll get more responses… most common problem here is “no response” – because not many weed clubs take tourists.
2 – ask a resident / friend who lives in Tenerife or has been to Tenerife to refer you / invite you. If they´re a resident in Tenerife then chances are you will strike gold. Why? GENERALLY speaking many tourists go to Amsterdam first and then later opting for Spain rather than Holland for a “weedcation” so GENERALLY speaking… Tourists that find themselves in what we call expensive “tourist traps” are not actually aware that they are in an expensive spot that purely caters for tourists, it may look nice and have all the bangs and whistles, but you will pay for this. Herb in Spain now is better quality than Amsterdam and almost half the price! This is the Spanish way… point is – if you ask a tourist for a good cannabis club, it´s possible you´ll end up in one of these “tourist clubs” and you also wouldn´t know it because compared to Amsterdam it´s normal. Ask a resident and he´ll know better than to entertain the Amsterdam “coffee shop” model.
3 – If we can help – Cloud9beyond. We don´t like to waste time, your on holiday. The fastest way to access – good, reputable cannabis clubs and No Expensive Tourist Traps. With us you can see everything, have a little smell and look around briefly before you make a decision whether you would like to join the club or not. We are very transparent because tried and tested we only work with the best! For the people and With the clubs – not the other way round like Spainweedguide and our copycats TenerifeWeed (We are WeedTenerife) they work for the clubs… not the people, and if you´ve come across a website called “help to weed” i would avoid this like the plague… the cannabis clubs they have on their website are absolute poo (kakas) most of them offer free membership as they are so.. err… rubbish – edited. And you don´t pay the club for this service, you pay “help to weed” 20€ and they´ll give access to all the clubs on their website… sounds good right? We know better we have been in this game for a while now. This is very important, read on…
Final thoughts and advice.
LISTEN CAREFULLY – This is the best advice you will ever receive – AS a RULE! Never pay for a membership any other place than AT the club itself when you are actually there. DO NOT pay for membership online even if it is directly to the club and it´s through the clubs official website – Still – NEVER do it unless you really know and trust what your doing, it´s risky.
WHY? – firstly – Picture this – pay online in advance for your membership, cool, done you say. As little as a few days later you get on the plane and off you go… you land etc, and you make your way to the club – TAXI! and then you get to the club – to find it´s closed, police closed it last night, last month, and even last year in some cases we´ve found
2- Also you really don´t know a cannabis club until you get there, and even still, today it´s the best club, next week it´s got new owners and is terrible, it´s now the worst club.
Also you can never be sure who anybody is.. who is for instance we have a new website – “Help to Weed” Who are these people and what are they doing? You´ll pay this website to give you access to “all the clubs on their website”, no reviews, no reputation, what happens if you get rejected at the clubs they promise on their website, are they even good clubs? Spainweedguide are other “online promoters” claiming they know all the best clubs in most of Spain ??? and write blogs in order to rank high and look “reputable” who are these people, try and contact them, good luck. We´ll tell you – spainweedguide are based in Barcelona – how can you tell me which are the best clubs in Tenerife, when you´ve never been to Tenerife. We know this because we are on soil in Tenerife and can see their blog has the wrong information – on everything – the clubs they claim are “the best cannabis clubs in Tenerife” are definately not! Be carefull and do your research as much as you can… if you find nothing, it means these people have no reputation, if you find reviews, forums, and their name being mentioned everywhere (good) then they are the real deal – from testimonial is best. Give it a try, type in Cloud9beyond in google, what you see is we´re everywhere, even tripadvisor forum and more. Went wayyy off track, I´m so sorry… anyway
ONLY when you get to the club, have a sniff of a little herb and look around, THEN decide if you want to join the club, and go ahead and pay for the membership, this gives you full control, if you´ve paid your membership fee online in advance, this just creates problems if you don´t visit the club and asking for your money back gets tricky right? Ye… avoid that, don´t waste money or time.
Have a nice day!
